Following Jesus Together

We are a group of people who have found faith in Jesus and we are exploring what it means to follow Jesus in our everyday lives.

As a community, we are ‘evangelical’ – meaning, we believe the Bible is God’s inspired book; and we are ‘charismatic’ – meaning, we believe God’s Holy Spirit is real and we can be empowered by the Holy Spirit today.

We are friendly and informal. Whether you are just curious about Christian faith, or if you have already found faith and you are looking for a community of friends, we would love to meet you!

In the 1980s Peter & Suzanne Doherty moved down to Essex from Scotland, in response to a call from God to work in Christian ministry. Peter took up the position of minster at a Congregational Chapel in Matching Tye. After some initial challenging years, one day the Holy Spirit fell on their small group in a dramatic way. This was a fulfilment of a very specific promise God had given Peter some time in advance.

The group of believers grew, and eventually they renamed themselves Gateway Christian Fellowship (our previous name) and moved into Harlow. There followed a period of many years when we rented a variety of schools and other buildings for our Sunday services. For a long time we had wanted a place of our own, and at around the time of the millennium, we purchased a site at Perry Road, Staple Tye from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brentwood.

Then, in 2004 we were able to open the Gateway Centre. Our first use of the building was a neighbourhood nursery that we started, and then a little later we actually were able to start meeting as a Church at the Gateway Centre.

Our full name is Gateway Freedom Church, Harlow. We are constituted as a Company Limited By Guarantee, registered at Companies House with Number 4859696, registered office at The Gateway Centre, Perry Road, Harlow, Essex CM18 7NR. We are a Registered Charity, Number 1099828.

A Warm Welcome Awaits You

We are a very diverse bunch with a wide range of nationalities and a mix of the young and not quite so young. We aim to be non-judgmental – our priority is to foster an environment where people can explore what it means to encounter Jesus in a safe, friendly and unpretentious setting.

You don’t have to worry about observing a set way of behaving during a service – if you just want to sit and observe, that is absolutely OK. Both before and after our services, there is opportunity to have cup of something and chat with some friendly people. Hopefully we will see you soon!
